Situated above Haussman's flattened city, the hill of Montmartre has a long and bloody history. The Romans decapitated Saint Denis here in 272. Legend has it that he and two other martyred bishop picked up their heads and carried them to their final resting point, 7 km away, where the Eglise Saint-Denis now stands -thus Montmartre (hill of the Martyrs).
